Works like a nasal pillow CPAP mask but without tubing or a machine
How is the EPAP mask used?
Wear it like a CPAP mask and breathe normally. During inspiration the valve opens allowing you to breathe in with ease. When you exhale the valve closes and redirects  the expired air through a narrow opening on the side of the valve, creating Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure (EPAP) in the upper airway, preventing snoring and sleep apnea. For a more comfortable experience, the expiratory pressure can be adjusted by rotating the sleeve to change the expiratory resistance.

Whether you are a light or a heavy snorer, the EPAP can be adjusted to your need.
1. Studies published in medical journals have shown that EPAP devices work well for all severities of obstructive sleep apnea. Apnea Hypopnea Index is improved, daytime sleepiness is reduced,  and oxygen saturation is improved (Berry et al Sleep 2012).  The Optipillows EPAP mask will do the same as other EPAP devices.

2. Optipillows uses EPAP technology, which is FDA cleared for treating snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. The EPAP mask uses expiratory resistance technology as existing devices and is very patient friendly. Furthermore the EPAP mask is reusable and allows you to adjust the expiratory resistance and pressure, making it easy to adapt and perhaps more effective.

3. It is highly recommended that the EPAP mask be used with the lowest resistance for as long as necessary until the user becomes fully comfortable and is able to fall asleep without problems. Thereafter the resistance can be increased.

How much pressure does the EPAP mask generate?

Studies were conducted under well controlled conditions, and the following results were obtained.

Helpful Hints !
When you start using the mask, keep the expiratory resistance open wide until you get acclimated. Practice using the mask during the day.  It is recommended to use the mask with minimal expiratory resistance until you become fully comfortable sleeping with the mask.  Once you are fully comfortable, close the expiratory resistance about half way and use it for a night. Then Increase or decrease the resistance until you find the best resistance and you begin to sleep well with minimal snoring and sleep apnea. It is possible that some people will not be able to fall asleep the first time they try it. If that happens, just take it off and get some sleep without it. The next few nights, it will become easier and easier.

Caution!
While using the EPAP mask , the mouth must remain closed for the mask to work. Opening the mouth occasionally is acceptable. When you are awake, you maybe inclined to open your mouth as you feel the pressure building up. This is normal and is not likely to occur during sleep because you would not be aware of the pressure build up.

The EPAP mask works for someone with mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring. It does not work for those with central sleep apnea, needing to use a full face mask, or those who need a BIPAP machine. People with severe obstructive sleep apnea will benefit to some degree.
