While using OptiPIllows , the mouth must remain closed for the mask to work. Opening the mouth occasionally is acceptable. When you are awake, you maybe inclined to open your mouth as you feel the pressure building up. This is normal and is not likely to occur during sleep because you would not be aware of the pressure build up.
When you start using the mask, keep the expiratory resistance open wide until you get acclimated. Practice using the mask during the day. It is recommended to use the mask with minimal expiratory resistance until you become fully comfortable sleeping with the mask. Once you are fully comfortable, close the expiratory resistance about half way and use it for a night. Then Increase or decrease the resistance until you find the best resistance and you begin to sleep well with minimal snoring and sleep apnea. It is possible that some people will not be able to fall asleep the first time they try it. If that happens, just take it off and get some sleep without it. The next few nights, it will become easier and easier.
Wear it like a CPAP mask and breathe normally. During inspiration the valve opens allowing you to breathe in with ease. When you exhale the valve closes and redirects the expired air through a narrow opening on the side of the valve, creating Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure (EPAP) in the upper airways, preventing snoring and sleep apnea. For a more comfortable experience, the expiratory pressure can be adjusted by rotating the sleeve to change the expiratory resistance.
OptiPillows is an EPAP nasal mask. It is not a CPAP mask. With CPAP, one needs a CPAP machine, a power supply, and one remains tethered to the CPAP tubing. With CPAP, the pressure in the airways remains positive throughtout the breathing cycle. With EPAP, the pressure is positive only during expiration, without using a CPAP machine or tubing. With the EPAP mask, one is free to move during sleep. There is evidence that the EPAP devices work well for all severities of snoring and sleep apnea.
How is the EPAP mask used?
Caution: The EPAP mask works for someone with mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring. It does not work for those with central sleep apnea, needing to use a full face mask, or those who need a BIPAP machine. People with severe obstructive sleep apnea will benefit to some degree.
Snoring and airway obstruction are due to events occurring in the upper airways near end expiration and begenning of inspiration. At end expiration, the upper airways are most susceptible to collapse, because the pressure is low, upper airways are narrowest, lung volume is smallest, and muscles are most relaxed. With the EPAP mask, collapse of the upper airways is prevented by maintaining a positive expiratory pressure during expiration. The EPAP mask works the same as Provent and Theravent that have been shown in clinical trials to be effective in treating snoring and all severities of obstructive sleep apnea. The EPAP mask is easy to use. If you like Provent or Theravent, you will like OptiPillows EPAP Mask. The EPAP mask is reusable, and can be used perhaps up to 1 year.
Caution: It is very important to become able to sleep comfortably with the EPAP mask, before increasing the expiratory pressure.
Works without a CPAP Machine
Peak Expiratory Pressure generated by the EPAP Mask
With side port fully open, it generates 1 to 3 cmH2O of pressure.
With side port 50% open, it generates 3 to 7 cmH2O of pressure.
With side port 25% open, it generates 8 to 14 cmH2O of pressure.
