1. What is EPAP mask?
EPAP mask is a nasal mask that generates positive pressure during expiration. Scientist have known for
many years that sleep apnea and snoring can be alleviated by applying positive pressure during
expiration. The EPAP mask my keep you awake the first time you try it. Do not give up after one try. It
is not a magic bullet, it may take a few nights to get used to it. If you cannot fall asleep, take it off. It
will become easier and easier after each night.
2. What is Optipillows?
It is an EPAP device integrated onto a nasal pillow mask. It is used like a CPAP mask but does not require
a CPAP machine. EPAP devices such as Theravent and Provent were introduced a few year ago, and have
been shown in clinical studies to be effective in treating snoring and sleep apnea.
3. How does OptiPillows work?
OptiPillows allows you to inhale easily with minimal resistance, but during exhalation, the air is directed
through a narrow opening, creating back pressure in the nose and mouth, preventing snoring and
sleep apnea. The size of the side opening can be adjusted to change the pressure during exhalation.
4. Is Optipillows right for me?
There is evidence that EPAP devices are as effective as CPAP in some patients with snoring and mild
obstructive sleep apnea.
5. How is EPAP different from CPAP?
CPAP, as the name indicates, provides continuous positive airway pressure throughout the breathing
cycle. In contrast, OptiPillows EPAP mask provides positive pressure only during the expiratory phase
of the breathing cycle.
6. How is Optipillows different from Provent?
Both use expiratory resistance technology, but Optipillows EPAP mask is reusable, easy to wear and
does not use adhesive material to hold the mask in place. You can wear it quickly with your eyes closed
and take it off easily. Furthermore, Optipillows EPAP mask has an adjustable expiratory resistance,
and is relatively inexpensive.
7. Can Optipillows replace my CPAP machine?
For people with snoring or with mild to moderate sleep apnea, it is possible that OptiPillows will work
as well as a CPAP machine. It is recommended that people with sever obstructive sleep apnea should
continue to use their CPAP and perhaps resort to using Optipillows only during travels or camping.
8. Do I need a script?
For now you don’t need a script to purchase Optipillows EPAP mask.
9. Can I use Optipillows during travel?
Optipillows EPAP mask is ideal for use during travel. You can store it in your pocket to use anytime, such
as during flight or camping. No power supply is needed. Optipillows EPAP mask can be worn and taken off
and re-worn as many times as you wish.
10. I have severe OSA, is it safe to use Optipillows?
Mild to moderate sleep apnea has been shown to be resolved almost fully with EPAP devices. Someone
with severe sleep apnea may benefit only partially. Therefore, use it only during emergency such as
during travel or when the power is out, but don’t replace your CPAP with an EPAP device.
11. I have central sleep apnea, can I use Optipillows?
Patients with central sleep apnea should rely on their CPAP machines, and should adhere to their
12. I use a full face mask, can I use Optipillows?
OptiPillows EPAP mask uses a nasal pillow type mask and may not be suitable for someone who needs a
full face mask.
13. How often should I replace my Optipillows?
Perhaps once a year, just like you would do with a CPAP mask.
14. I open my mouth sometime, is that a problem?
Opening the mouth occasionally to sigh or cough is not a problem while using EPAP devices. After a
breath or two, the pressure will rise again. With CPAP, opening the mouth, causes dryness because
of the high volume of air flowing through the mouth. Dryness of the nose or throat is not a problem
with the EPAP mask.
